Funeral services for Leonard Vanderpoel, age 88, of Onamia, will be held Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11 AM at the Holy Cross Center in Onamia with Rev. Joe Boeringa officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 PM Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia and 1 hour prior to the service at the Holy Cross Center on Saturday. Leonard Lloyd Vanderpoel was born February 04, 1928 in Ogilvie, Minnesota to Arthur and Mary (Willms) Vanderpoel. He was united in marriage to Helen Klein on June 10, 1949 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia. Leonard served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1948-1949. From 1948 to 1962, Leonard worked at various jobs, some of them including the Onamia Co-op Creamery and the Pure Oil Station. In 1962, he started to work as a custodian at the Onamia Public Schools. He drove bus until he retired in 1994. From 1994 to 2012, he was employed at Mille Lacs Health System as a currier until his health began to fail. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. Leonard was a “regular” for many years at the Cedarwood coffee table. Leonard also enjoyed woodworking and made many things for family and friends. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He also attended Onamia United Methodist Church, where he was an active member of the Men’s group. He served on the Bethany Church Council, Coop Credit Union, and Onamia Township Board. He was active in the Onamia Senior Center where he enjoyed playing Bingo. He was a very loving husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, and was very proud of this entire family and often made the remark, “we’ve sure got good kids!!” Leonard passed away Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Saint Cloud Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Helen; sons, Keith (Vonnie) of Wahkon and Norman (Cheryl) of Ramsey; daughters, Judy (Gerald) Vogtlin of Onamia and Janice (Gaylyn) Magner of Sauk Rapids; grandchildren, Betsy (Neil) Hailstone, Sam (Rebecca Leonard) Vanderpoel, Tonia (Jamey) Turner, Jon Vanderpoel, David (Karen) Vanderpoel, Peter (Alison) Vogtlin, Tommy (Brianna) Vogtlin, Michael (Barbara) Ruhland, and Jillian (Nolan) Strom; great-grandchildren, Mattheus, Simon (who shares a birthday with grandpa great), Charlie, Catie, Carrie, Hayden, Orin, Dixie, Roman, Vivienne, and Vera; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Donald and Clarence, grandson, Abel Vanderpoel, nephews, Russell Vanderpoel and Greg Vanderpoel; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Vanderpoel.
